"Doing the dog"...

Sometimes some expressions in Spanish have nothing to do with those in English, that's why some spanish learners tend to confuse or even invent expressions like "doing the dog" (as last week said my pupils in class...) refering to "doing nothing at all...". Imagine what the American lecturer Ethan was thinking at that moment. It was very funny anyway...

Halloween is coming!

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago.

All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, which was created by Christians to convert pagans, and is celebrated on November 1st. The Catholic church honored saints on this designated day.

Origin of Halloween

Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.

Samhain signifies "summers end". Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

Bonfires

In northern Ireland, it was customary for Druids to perform ritualistic ceremonies and make sacrifices to pacify their gods. The Celts would bring wood and start their Samhain bonfire or, fire festival, on the hilltop. Often, they would throw the bones of slaughtered cattle into the flames.
The word "bonfire" is said to be derived from such "bone fires." Bonfires and sacrifices guaranteed that the sun would burn brightly after a long, dreary winter. It's common to witness hundreds of traditional bonfires in Ireland every year on Halloween Night.

Costumes

Halloween costumes originated from the Celts when they lit huge bonfires and celebrated Samhain by dressing up in elaborate animal skins and heads to disguise themselves as spirits and demons so that the real ones couldn't distinguish them as being human. Their ceremonies consisted of dancing, telling stories, and reading fortunes.

Jack 'O Lanterns

The traditions of carving jack 'o lanterns originates with the Celts. A miserable man named Jack, tricked the devil. Unable to enter heaven or hell after his death, he was destined to roam the earth. Jack placed a piece of coal into a carved-out turnip and used it as a lantern to keep the evil spirits away. Today, pumpkins (which are easier to cut) are carved into jack-o-lanterns, lit and placed outside of doorways for the same purpose.

Trick or Treating

The custom of trick or treating evolved in Ireland, centuries ago. In preparation for All Hollow's Eve, the poor would call upon the rich folks and request money, gifts and food. The food was gathered for a huge feast and celebration.

"All the fish is sold", jejejeje. Chicos/as, ya está todo dicho y hecho. Aquí y ahora se termina mi "labor" con vosotros :(... Mañana comenzáis la prueba que tanto tiempo llevais esperando y preparando, parecÍa que no iba a llegar...
Hace poco yo tb hice un examen importante (por eso hoy estoy aqui...) y debéis pensar varias cosas:

1. Ya no importa lo que pudiste hacer y no hiciste, no es dia de hacerse reproches ni ponerse histéricos...simplemente maximizar lo que teneis asimilado que no es poco...
2. Tenéis que afrontarlo con serenidad y calma, ni eufóricos ni deprimidos. Pensad que los nervios solo van a entorpeceros...confiad en vuestra capacidad!
3. ...y último, como a todo en la vida, a esto hay que echarle muchas ganas. Cuando la actitud es positiva y se pone la cabeza y el corazón en lo que hacemos las cosas salen bien...;)

NO ESTARÉIS SOLOS, todos los que os queremos (incluida yo...) estaremos con vosotros en esos momentos de una manera u otra....

Selectividad Tips!

Hola chicos/as, nerviosos? espero que no. Ya habéispasado lo más duro, esto ya es seguir rodando, de verdad... Aqui os dejo nos ultimos consejitos para enfrentar el examen el martes. Espero podeir ir a veros en algun momento, es mi intención...

Antes de elegir tu opción, fíjate en la parte de Use of English y en la composición y en el que os veais más cómodos, a por él!

EJERCICIO DE COMPREHENSION

• Lee el título y las preguntas de comprensión antes de leer el texto. Te harás una idea de lo que trata.
• Lee el texto de manera rápida, tratando de entenderlo en general. No te detengas en las palabras que no sepas.
• Vuelve a leer las preguntas con mucha atención.
• Lee también las preguntas de léxico por si al volver a leer el texto encuentras alguna respuesta.
• Relee el texto, esta vez trata de localizar dónde se encuentran las respuestas a las preguntas.
• Lee las preguntas atentamente una a una, piensa en lo que te piden exactamente y encuentra las líneas donde se haya la respuesta. Trata de responder con tus palabras preferiblemente. No importa que emplees algunas palabras del texto pero utilizando estructuras distintas. Pero si no te ves capaz, usa las del texto, pero usalas bien! 
• Recuerda que la estructura del inglés es bastante fija:

Subject+Verb+Indirect Object+ Direct Object+ Manner+ Place+Time
Subject-Verb Agreement
Adjective +Noun

USE OF ENGLISH
 
VOCABULARY

• Una vez contestadas las preguntas de comprensión, pasa a las de léxico. Fíjate bien en lo que se te pregunta exactamente. No actúes a la ligera. Recuerda que tienes que dar la palabra en la categoría de palabra que se te pide, verb, noun, etc.
• Si desconoces la palabra de la que te piden un sinónimo o antónimo, intenta comprender su significado por el contexto.
• Recuerda que si te dicen "Find" obviamente es encontrarla en el texto, mientras que "Give" teneis que sacarla de vuestra mente brillante.

GRAMMAR

• No confundas las reglas de un tipo de transformación con las de otra (por ejemplo: la transformación de activa a pasiva con los cambios de estilo indirecto a indirecto)
• Antes de hacer la respuesta recuerda la regla que debes aplicar. Procura no traducir mucho o que la traducción no sea la base de la transformación que hagas
• Si no comprendes alguna palabra es no tan importante para hacer los ejercicios de gramática correctamente.

COMPOSITION

• Recuerda que se puntúa: corrección gramatical, riqueza léxica, distribución adecuada del texto, orden y limpieza y madurez de ideas. Haz un esquema de ideas.
• Observa las mismas reglas estructurales que en las respuestas de comprensión
• Utiliza conjunciones y otros recursos para enlazar frases y párrafos.
• Escribe con BUENA LETRA
• Solo los aspectos formales que siempre os repito de parrafos (intro, parrafos y conclusion, una idea por parrafo...),margenes, claridad y limpieza...os da un punto!
• Guardad un tiempo para repasar el examen, es fundamental!

Farewell, my lovely...

Uff, este es el primer post que no sé cómo empezar ni qué poner que sea sincero y que exprese todo lo que pienso y siento estos días. Con este post veis que delante de vosotros, allí en la pizarra hay personas normales, en este caso alguien que quizá pueda tener los mismos miedos, inseguridades y mismos sentimientos que vosotros…

Después de todo un curso, hoy no tengo palabras suficientes para decir todo lo bueno y valioso que me llevo de vosotros. Y la verdad lo tengo que aceptar, os voy a echar de menos. A pesar de todos los malos ratos, ha sido un curso excelente. Yo me he sentido cómoda y apreciada tanto a nivel profesional como a nivel personal que a veces es más importante. Y es que una cosa es cierta, y que no se os suba mucho…pero grupos así como vosotros dan sentido a nuestra profesión.

Me llena de satisfacción haberme sentido cercana a vosotros, incluso que muchos profes me llamen la “co-tutora del BS”… espero que vosotros también lo hayáis sentido así.

Lo dicho muchachos/as… un placer;)!!
